Leaps and Bounds

Our darling baby Shiloh,

At 8 weeks old you are entering your 2nd developmental leap and I am feeling ready to take this leap with you. I’m not dreading the crying, the crankiness or the clingyness. Instead I am so looking forward to nurturing you as you make new discoveries, to soothing you when those discoveries become overwhelming and to holding you tight as often as you need it.

I remember your first leap like it was yesterday. Our Wonder Weeks book was still in the post. Your mama and I almost didn’t recognise the signs until we were well into the swing things.

In the weeks following your birth and whilst adjusting to life with your newborn self, I had almost forgotten all about The Wonder Weeks. I remember one day we were shopping in baby bunting and beautiful new mum excitedly shared her experience with The Wonder Weeks app and how much it helped her navigate her babies behaviour through her first few #leaps. I dived straight in, reading every little thing I could to help us understand how to best Leap as a family because right on cue, at 5 weeks, your tiny world began to change and expand before all of our eyes.

Suddenly you could see a little further, your focus became a little clearer. You began to follow movement in front of you. You could not only hear us, but recognise our voices and turn toward us in a room. Your impressive newborn strength only grew. You started to want to play so we introduced your activity mat with all your brightly coloured friends that ring, sing, dingle and squeak. Your mama found a short sensory video with high contrast colours and soothing music that you love. As you leapt, so did we, right along side you.

Can you really blame me for being excited to share this next leap with you? We can already see some of the changes. You spend more time observing the blinds - it's the patterns that are capturing you. You know that a bib around your neck means a bottle isn’t far away. You automatically turn your head to find your favourite toy when we place you on your change mat. You know that when we pick you up without clothes and wander down the hall it must be bath time and you love that!

Your mama and I won’t ever resent you as you go through your leaps. Yes it will be tiring and challenging for all of us. But we promise to always be patient with you. Nothing makes us happier than holding you and whispering reassurances in your tiny ears.

So leap well our little one. We are right by your side, ready to take the leaps with you.

With love,

Your two devoted mums xx
